MORE FOR YOUR MONEY

When to call a travel agent

By Jane Engle

December 06, 2008

Even though I'm a travel writer, I sometimes use a travel agent. His savvy advice and careful research save me time and money. Like any professional, he charges fees.

It makes sense. "You wouldn't walk into a lawyer's office and expect them to give you free advice," said Chris Russo, president of the American Society of Travel Agents, or ASTA, a trade group based in Alexandria, Va.

But some travel agents do give free advice. Because they earn sales commissions of 10% or more from certain cruise and tour companies, they often charge nothing to book these. Not so with airline tickets, which generally don't earn commissions, and some complicated itineraries that may take hours or days to assemble.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Travel agents, who sell nearly 40% of all travel in the U.S., can be helpful. But knowing when to engage one and what to pay can be confusing.

I contact my agent to book cruises and vacation packages, for which he charges nothing, and foreign trips, where his services are invaluable. I book my own domestic air tickets and hotels. (To find an agent, try the database at www.travelsense.org.)

As suppliers tighten up on sales commissions, more agents are charging. Depending on the agency and the service, you may pay nothing, a flat fee, a percentage of the trip cost or by the hour. The chart with this column shows median fees charged last year by members of ASTA.

Here's what to expect and why:

Air tickets: Nearly all travel agencies charge fees, typically $25 or more, to book these. That's because major airlines stopped paying sales commissions on domestic tickets in 2002.

Issuing a ticket isn't cheap, said Russo, who runs Travel Partners in Broomfield, Colo. It may cost about $30 per booking, he said, when he factored in salaries and overhead such as office leases, insurance and fees to access the ticket clearinghouse.

Cruises and tours: Last year, less than a third of agents charged fees to book these trips. But that number may be increasing for cruises as agents get caught between falling fares and sales commissions.

Cruise lines have begun deducting port fees, fuel surcharges and other items from the total eligible for commission, said Joe McClure, president of Montrose Travel in Montrose. With some fares less than $100 per person per day, it may not pencil out for the agency.

An agent who books a $299 weekend cruise may earn a commission on only $99 of it, or about $12, McClure said, but the transaction may cost his company $30.

Some agencies charge fees to make up the difference. McClure said he sends customers seeking cheap cruises to his company's website, where transaction costs are lower.

Hotels: More than half of agents last year charged service fees to book lodgings. Whether you're likely to be charged depends on the type of hotel.

Because big chains and luxury lodgings often pay sales commissions, your agent may book these for free. But small independent hotels, budget places and bed-and-breakfast inns may not pay commissions, so expect a booking fee for those.

Trip planning: Last year, two-thirds of agents charged for this service, one of their most valuable.

McClure and Russo said they let individual agents decide whether to charge, depending on the trip. For itineraries that require significant research and don't bring in enough commissions to cover costs, McClure said, the charge would be $30 to $50 an hour.

Russo said he charged $100 per hour, which was nonrefundable but could be applied to the trip cost.

The bottom line: Feeling exploited? Don't. The average travel agent makes less than $29,000 per year in this thin-margined enterprise, ASTA says.

When you pay a service fee, "we're not getting gold rims for our Escalades or Mercedes," Russo said.

And you may get priceless help.

Disney Cruise Line Sets Expanded Europe Program for 2010

Published on: October 7, 2008

Disney Cruise Line (DCL) said it will reposition one of its ships, Disney Magic, to Europe for a five-month season of Northern European and Mediterranean cruises in 2010. For the first time, DCL will offer a 12-night Northern European Capitals cruise, where guests can experience fjords, city centers and Viking lore in such Scandinavian ports as Oslo, Copenhagen and Stockholm. The ship will also sail to Warnemunde, Germany, gateway to Berlin, and to St. Petersburg, Russia. Disney Magic will overnight in St. Petersburg, allowing guests time to experience the city known as the “Cultural Capital of Russia” or use the second day to book a shore excursion to Moscow.

“The Northern European Capitals itinerary provides our guests with an amazing collection of destinations to explore,” said Disney Cruise Line President Tom McAlpin. “We’re excited to bring the rich history, culture and folklore these ports offer to life for our guests in a family-friendly way only Disney Cruise Line can deliver.”

Departing out of Dover, England, Disney Magic will sail a total of four 12-night cruises to the Northern European capitals in June and July 2010. Rates for the 12-night Northern European Capitals itinerary start at $3,649 per person for a category 11 stateroom. Book-ending the summer season in Northern Europe, Disney Magic will once again return to the Mediterranean with 10- and 11-night cruises, but with three new ports of call not offered when DCL last sailed the Mediterranean. In addition to popular ports in Italy, France and Spain, the Disney Magic will visit Tunis, in Northern Africa, the island nation of Malta, and Corsica, the island that was the birthplace of Napoleon.

Departing out of Barcelona, Spain, the Disney Magic will sail four 10-night and four 11-night cruises in the Mediterranean in April, May, August and September. Rates for the 10- and 11-night Mediterranean cruises start at $2,529 per person for a category 11 stateroom. DCL will also offer four repositioning cruises including two 14-night transatlantic voyages, a seven-night cruise from Barcelona to Dover, England, and an eight-night cruise from Dover back to Barcelona. The shift is designed to accommodate guests looking for slightly longer cruises with DCL while children are enjoying their summer break. California Sues YTB For Engaging in Pyramid Scheme

A day before 20,000 members of YTB (YourTravelBiz.com) were about to convene for the company’s annual meeting in St. Louis, California Attorney General Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced a lawsuit against the company. The lawsuit, which seeks $25 million in fines and restitution, charges YTB with operating a “gigantic pyramid scheme” that recruited tens of thousands of members with deceptive claims that members could earn huge sums of money through its online travel agencies.

“YourTravelBiz.com operates a gigantic pyramid scheme that is immensely profitable to a few individuals on top and a complete rip-off for most everyone else,” Brown said. “Today’s lawsuit seeks to shut down the company’s unlawful operation before more people are exploited by the scam.” The attorney general’s office issued a statement that said YourTravelBiz.com and its affiliates operate an illegal pyramid scheme that only benefits members if and when they find enough new members to join the scam. Once enrolled, the attorney general’s office said, members who join the pyramid scheme earn compensation for each new person they enlist, regardless of whether they sell any travel. The company lures new members by offering huge income opportunities through online travel agencies yet the typical person actually makes nothing selling travel.

The attorney general’s office said that, according to company records, there were over 200,000 YTB members in 2007 that typically paid more than $1,000 per year -- $449.95 to set up an “online travel agency” with a monthly fee of $49.95. In 2007, only 38 percent of the company’s members made any travel commissions, according the attorney general’s office. For the minority of members who made any travel commission in 2007, the median income was $39 -- less than one month’s cost to keep the YTB website. There are at least 139,000 of the company’s travel websites, all virtually identical, on the Internet.

YourTravelBiz.com’s extensive marketing materials include videos of people driving Porsches and other luxury cars, holding $10,000 checks, and claiming to be raking in millions of dollars in profits. The company advertises through its website,
www.ytb.com and at conventions, workshops and nationwide sales meetings, many of which have been held in California locations such as Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Francisco and San Diego.

The California attorney general’s office charged YTB, its affiliates, and the company’s founders, J. Lloyd Tomer, J. Scott Tomer, J. Kim Sorensen and Andrew Cauthen, with operating an “endless chain scheme,” an unlawful pyramid in which a person pays money for the chance to receive money by recruiting new members to join the pyramid. The attorney general also charged the company with unfair business practices and false advertising practices, including deceptive claims that members can earn millions of dollars with the company, operating without filing legally mandated documents with the attorney general and the Department of Corporations, and selling an illegal travel discount program

Under California’s unfair business practices statue, the company is liable for $2,500 per violation of law. Attorney General Brown is suing YourTravelBiz.com to get a court order that bars the company from making false or misleading statements and assesses a civil penalty of at least $15 million and at least $10 million in restitution for Californians who were allegedly ripped off by the company. For more information on YTB, visit
www.yourtravelbiz.com. The California attorney general said consumers who believe they have been affected by the alleged pyramid scheme should send a written complaint with copies of any supporting documentation to: Office of the Attorney General, Public Inquiry Unit, P.O. Box 944255, Sacramento, Calif. 94244-2550; or through an online complaint form at http://ag.ca.gov/contact/complaint_form.php?cmplt=CL.

NWA Warns Customers of Phony E-Mail

Bogus e-mail contains virus

Northwest Airlines today warned e-mail users that an e-mail containing phony ticket confirmation and enrollment information is being sent using the Company’s name. The e-mails are suspected of containing a virus that infects the user’s computer when they open attachments.

The e-mails thank the recipient for using the new service “Buy flight ticket Online” on the airline’s website. It states an account has been set up and gives the e-mail user an account number and password. It also tells them how much their credit card has been charged. An attachment is supposed to be the invoice and ticket but instead contains a virus that infects the user’s computer once it is opened.

The e-mail also contains spelling and grammatical errors.

Northwest Airlines’ vice president of e-commerce, Al Lenza says, “Customers should be aware that these e-mails are not coming from the airline. NWA itineraries are specific and contain information that customer will recognize. If the format does not look familiar to you, and you have not recently purchased a ticket, do not open the attachment. Delete the email right away.”

Lufthansa Cancels 70 Flights on Second Day of Strike

Published on: July 30, 2008 1:57 p.m.

Lufthansa said it had cancelled 70 flights on Tuesday, the second day of an open-ended strike by maintenance workers for higher wages. Service was cancelled to domestic and European destinations, but represented just 3 percent of all scheduled flights by the carrier. Long-haul flights were operating normally. About 5,000 maintenance, freight and catering staff stopped work on Monday but few flights were disrupted on the first day. The union wants a 9.8 percent pay hike over a year for around 50,000 workers, while Lufthansa has offered 6.7 percent over 21 months. Lufthansa said customers should check on their flight status prior to their trip. The airline is offering a dedicated customer hotline for information regarding bookings affected by the strike: 0800–8506070 (toll free from the German landline and mobile). Customers calling from outside Germany are kindly requested to contact their local Lufthansa Service Center.

Women Prefer Travel Over Flowers, Jewelry for Valentines

Published on: February 13, 2008

Guys wanting to wow their wife or girlfriend with a last-minute gift for Valentine's Day may want to pack their bags, according to survey results released by the Travel Industry Association (TIA). The survey shows that a stay at a hotel or bed and breakfast is even more popular for a Valentine's Day gift than flowers or jewelry. Research firm Synovate surveyed more than 1,000 women across the country to find out what they would prefer to receive as a Valentine's Day gift, assuming all options cost about the same. A romantic getaway topped the list, with four in 10 (36 percent) women reporting that they would most prefer an overnight stay in a hotel or bed and breakfast. Dinner at a restaurant ranked second, preferred by one-third (32 percent) of women. Jewelry was preferred as a gift by only two in ten (21 percent) women. Flowers (8 percent) and Lingerie (2 percent) ranked at the bottom of the list. Women aged 25-34 years old are the most likely to prefer the gift of travel for Valentine's Day (49 percent), followed by women aged 35-44 years old (39 percent). Married women (40 percent) and, not surprisingly, women with children (42 percent) are also much more likely to prefer a romantic getaway. For more information, visit tia.org.

Although it wasn't always easy, Although it wasn't always easy, "Snow White," like its heroine, has lived happily ever after.

Snow White Turns 70

In 1937, movies cost a dime and the country was in the depths of the Great Depression. Radio was an exciting new phenomenon, while TV was hardly a gleam on the horizon. And a young princess was about to sing her way into the hearts of America.

Looking back now, 70 years later, it's easy to forget what an astonishing achievement Walt Disney's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" really is. The first animated feature in movie history, it is also one of the most beautifully achieved -- and the most beloved. With "Snow White" having just celebrated its 70th anniversary in December, we thought it was time to take a look back at some lesser-known aspects of this landmark film.

"Snow White" launched Disney as THE house of animation, and began a legendary string of animated classics. However, it came perilously close to not being made at all! Feature-length animation was a huge gamble for the Studio -- would anyone really want to watch a mere cartoon for more than a few minutes? Walt was convinced...

"We're breaking new ground and taking travel insurance to a whole new level again", said TravelSafe President/CEO Scott Perfetto.

"TravelSafe is now the only major third-party travel insurance provider that can provide a full cash refund in the event of cancellation for any situation not ordinarily covered, such as work-related reasons, named hurricanes, or even a simple change of mind." Perfetto explained. "Based on feedback from the many travel agents who use our products, we wanted to make their jobs as easy as possible while continuing to offer the most comprehensive, consumer-friendly plans available."

The new "Cancel For Any Reason" benefit now covers up to 100 percent of a traveler's non-refundable trip costs, depending upon the amount of penalty assessed by the trip or tour provider. The "Cancel For Any Reason" benefit is automatically included with the recently-upgraded Premier Plan. It's also available as an option with the popular Vacation Plan as well as the Prestige Elite Plan.

"Our primary concern is that our travel agents and their clients have the travel protection they need." Perfetto stated. "We are very confident that TravelSafe's upgraded "Cancel For Any Reason" benefit will be an excellent fit for travelers and travel agents who have come to expect an excellent travel insurance product at an affordable price."

CBP to require IDs for border crossings beginning Jan. 31 (12/21/2007)

WASHINGTON -- The Customs and Border Protection agency issued a notice reminding the traveling public that starting on Jan. 31 its officers would no longer accept oral declarations of citizenship for entry to the U.S.

Prior to the notice appearing in the Federal Register on Dec. 21, the CBP had announced its intention to institute the new border procedure in the early part of the month.

According to the notice, citizens of the U.S., Canada and Bermuda will have to provide official documentation, such as a birth certificate, a driver's license or other government-issued identification, in order to enter the U.S.

The new procedure is the first step towards implementation of the next phase of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, a law that will require travelers crossing U.S. land borders and sea ports to present a passport or other specified identification beginning as early as 2008.

The first phase of the WHTI, which went into affect in January, already requires airline passengers to present such identification

Hilton heir to donate proceeds of Hilton, Harrah's sales to charity (12/27/2007)

By Jeri Clausing

Barron Hilton said he will donate $1.2 billion of his proceeds from the sale of Hilton Hotels Corp. and Harrah's Entertainment to the charity his father created. In addition, he said he intends to give the foundation 97% of his fortune -- estimated today at $2.3 billion -- when he dies.

The money will go to the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, which was established by Barron Hilton's father, Conrad, founder of Hilton Hotels. Barron Hilton serves as chair of the foundation.

In a news release, the foundation said Barron Hilton will donate approximately $1.2 billion of proceeds from the recent sale of Hilton Hotels Corp. to private equity firm the Blackstone Group and the pending sale of Harrah's Entertainment to private investment interests. That will bring the total value of the Hilton Foundation and its related charitable entities to approximately $4.5 billion.

According to the release, at a recent board meeting Barron Hilton also indicated his intent to contribute 97% of his entire net worth to the foundation when he dies.

"Speaking for the family as well as the foundation, we are all exceedingly proud and grateful for this extraordinary commitment," said Steven Hilton, president and CEO of the foundation. "Working to alleviate human suffering around the globe, regardless of race, religion or geography, is the mandate of the foundation set by my grandfather, Conrad Hilton, and now reinforced by my father, Barron Hilton."

Conrad Hilton established the foundation in 1944 and, when he died in 1979, left virtually all of his fortune to the foundation

Passport Information

On October 4, 2006, the U.S. Government extended the deadline for Guests to obtain passports for sea travel to the Caribbean, including the Bahamas and Mexico. The deadline is now expected to be as early as January 2008. Please note, however, that recent legislative changes may permit an even later deadline depending on whether certain requirements are in place by January 1, 2008.

For air travel, however, the deadline was January 23, 2007. This means that all travelers, including U.S. Citizens* and all foreign nationals, traveling to the United States by air on or after January 23, 2007, such as Guests flying to Orlando, Florida from Canada, are still required to carry a valid passport after the effective date.

Despite these new requirements, we encourage Guests to obtain a passport as soon as possible. Having a passport allows you to always be prepared to travel wherever you wish, and offers an added measure of security when traveling.

Please be aware that it is the Traveler’s responsibility to acquire proper citizenship documentation (passport and/or green card).  Those without proper documentation at time of departure will be denied boarding.

unard's three Queens to make historic stop in NYC (12/28/2007)

Cunard Line will have its three ships, the Queen Mary 2, the Queen Elizabeth 2 and the newly launched Queen Victoria, in New York City on Jan. 13 for what the British line said will be the first and only time.

The cruise line's three vessels will sail out of New York harbor together at 6:30 p.m. and will pass the Statue of Liberty during a fireworks display. Cunard said it expects thousands of people to gather at viewing locations around the city to watch the event.

The QM2 will depart from its homeport at Brooklyn's Red Hook terminal; the QE2 and the Queen Victoria will depart from piers at Manhattan's West Side cruise terminal. The QE2 will then begin its 26th and final world cruise before retiring in November 2008 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as a floating hotel.

The date will mark the first time in Cunard's 168-year history that three "Queens" have been in service at the same time, Cunard said.

Cunard identified four viewing locations along Manhattan's West Side:

v     Battery Park: On the southern shoreline of Manhattan.

v     Robert F. Wagner Jr. Park: Just south of the Museum of Jewish Heritage overlooking the Hudson River with great views of the Statue of Liberty.

v     The Esplanade: Running the entire length of Battery Park City, along the Hudson River from Stuyvesant High School on the north end all the way south to Battery Park.

v     Hudson River Park: 550 acre park extends for five miles along the Manhattan shoreline from Battery Place to West 59th Street.

Breaking news for travel managers, Dec. 11, 2007

According to the travel news I just read…If you’re planning on being in Europe in December…be prepared:

Ground Staff who works for Air France at Paris' Orly Airport plans to hold a 24-hour strike on Dec. 20, 2007.

Rail and public transportation workers are set to launch a new series of strikes this week, with some rail unions planning to begin their walkout at 8 p.m. tonight

A truck-driver strike brought traffic on Italian roads and highways to a standstill Monday. The five-day nationwide strike, initiated by seven trade unions, is in protest of high fuel prices. Traffic jams were reported on the outskirts of Rome, Milan, Naples, Bologna and Genoa, where convoys of trucks drove very slowly to disrupt traffic. Ventimiglia, a key border post on the Italian Riviera, was blocked by some 500 trucks, impairing access to France. Drivers also blocked the Frejus tunnel, which links the two countries.

Staff at Cyprus Airways have called for a 24-hour strike to begin this Wednesday, with a further 48-hour strike planned for Dec. 17 to 18

Speaking of Strikes:  Keep up with Writers Guild of America here

The charge applies to published sailings through April 2009. Regent Seven Seas Cruises instituted a fuel surcharge of $7.50 per person, per day for all 2008 bookings not paid in full by Dec. 1.

CRUISE WEST passengers were evacuated from the Spirit of Nantucket near Virginia Beach, Va., when the ship's captain ran the vessel aground to prevent it from possibly sinking after it began taking on water. The Spirit of Nantucket was traveling from Alexandria, Va., to Charleston, S.C., and was sailing on the Intracoastal Waterway near the Pungo region of Virginia Beach when the incident occurred. The U.S. Coast Guard said it was investigating why the ship began taking on water. Cruise West said all 66 guests and crew members were safely transferred from the vessel to a local hotel.

NCL partners with U.S. Army to offer jobs to soldiers (05/24/2007)

Norwegian Cruise Line will offer priority hiring status to soldiers in an army employment program on the line's U.S.-flagged NCL America ships, the cruise line said May 23.

NCL signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Recruiting Command to participate in the U.S. Army's Partnership for Youth Success program, a program the Army has with about 500 U.S. corporations and public sector agencies nationwide to help the Army "attract, train and deploy talented young people who want to serve their country, but also want to help secure their future success once their Army service is complete", NCLsaid.

Our participation in this program allows us the opportunity to develop long-term relationships with quality candidates for our NCL America ships in Hawaii," said Colin Veitch, NCL's president and CEO, in a statement. "These men and women have the values, leadership qualities, discipline and other traits that will be an asset to our fleet."

Other companies involved in the program include Pepsi, BellSouth, Citicorp, Dell and Sears.

"NCL will provide our Army's highly motivated, dedicated and trained soldiers great employment opportunities upon their completion of service to their country," said Brigadier General Joseph Orr, Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Recruiting Command, in a statement.

Under the terms of the agreement, NCL said, as part of the enlistment process recruits will sign a statement of understanding of intent to interview for one of approximately 50 positions on NCL America ships upon completion of their term of service, NCL said.

Almost 30 enlisted soldiers have already expressed interest in working for NCL America once they finish their terms beginning in 2009, NCL said, and have applied for a variety of onboard positions including cook, bar manager, bell person, deck steward, provision master, manifest administrator, printer and youth counselor.

Netherlands Antilles offer tax rebate for meetings, conventions (04/04/2007)

New tax initiatives between the U.S. and the Netherlands Antilles that took effect last month mean good news for meetings and convention planners.

The agreement allows U.S. taxpayers to claim a tax deduction for expenses associated with a convention held in the Netherlands Antilles to the same extent as a convention held in the US.

The implementation of the Tax Information Exchange Agreement March 22 means that the five islands of the Netherlands Antilles -- Bonaire; Curacao; Saba; St. Eustatius; and St. Maarten -- are considered part of the North American area. (Aruba had previously been considered part of the Netherlands Antilles until 1986 when it was granted a "status apart" and became a separate part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands.)

Expenses incurred while attending conventions, business meetings and seminars on the five islands are allowed as deductions according to the same regulations as if each of the five islands were a U.S. territory.

"These tax information agreements strengthen the relationship between the Netherlands Antilles and the U.S." said Aimee Kleinmoedig, director of the Curacao Tourism Corp. in North America. "On behalf of Curacao, we are thrilled to be part of the initiative.

"If our beaches, culture and diversity weren't reason enough to consider Curacao for business and conventions, this should certainly be the final push," Kleinmoedig added.

Enterprise Will Take Over Alamo and National

Enterprise Rent-A-Car – plans to purchase Vanguard Car Rental Group, the parent company of Alamo Rent a Car and National Car Rental.

The deal will pair two companies with complementary markets, since Enterprise focuses on insurance replacement and in-town rentals while Alamo and National have a stronger presence in airports. The deal will likely be reviewed closely by U.S. antitrust regulators. Vanguard had reportedly been in merger talks recently with Dollar Thrifty.

Germany: Authorities ban smoking on trains

As of Sept. 1, smoking is now prohibited on all trains and at more than 5,000 train stations across Germany. Some of the country's largest stations will be equipped with special smoking rooms. The ban, which was approved in May, also forbids smoking in all public places, but local laws, which vary from state to state, regulate smoking in restaurants and cafés within their jurisdiction.

NO IFS, ANDS OR BUTTS ABOUT IT:

Puerto Rico's new smoke-free regulations that took effect March 2, 2007, place it at the forefront of Caribbean destinations with a comprehensive smoking ban. However, the Cayman Islands may soon join Puerto Rico on that smoke-free list if a proposal now before its Legislative Assembly is approved. Puerto Rico's law prohibits smoking at all food establishments, cultural centers, casinos, bars, clubs, convention centers, and public and government buildings. Hotel rooms designated as "smoke-friendly" are exempt from the ban, but all hotels must post the new regulations and implement proper ventilation and maintenance procedures in rooms where smoking is permitted. If passed, the Cayman Islands' smoking ban would be just as restrictive as Puerto Rico's.

Carnival Adds New Rule Banning Non-Alcoholic Drinks Brought Onboard 3/29/2007

Carnival Cruise Lines – issued a new policy this week banning passengers from bringing non-alcoholic drinks (including bottled water, sodas, and juice) onboard its ships. Passengers who carry specific beverages for medical reasons can present a note from their doctor to be exempted from this rule. Royal Caribbean enforces a similar policy already, and many cruise lines prohibit passengers from carrying their own alcoholic beverages onboard as well.

CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES rolled back the changes it recently made to its onboard beverage policy and decided to allow passengers to bring limited quantities of nonalcoholic beverages onboard. Earlier this month Carnival had said it instituted a policy that would ban passengers from bringing any nonalcoholic beverages onboard after "so many people were abusing our leniency in terms of the quantity they were bringing on board." The line reconsidered its program and "in the end it was decided to continue to allow limited quantities but to monitor the situation." 6/2/07
